You say Vista is slow? How about taking a look at the hardware you're using. Here are my personal MINIMUM system requirements (As I use Intel):
PROCESSOR: Intel Dual-Core 2GHz or equivalent
MEMORY: 1GB DDR2
HARD DISK: 150GB hard disk
OPTICAL DRIVE: 8X DVD+/-RW or equivalent
SOUND CARD: Realtek HD Audio or equivalent
VIDEO CARD: ATI Radeon 200 Series or equivalent
NETWORK CARD: Fast Ethernet (100MBits/Sec) compatible ethernet card AND/OR 12MBits/sec capable wireless network card
INTERNET ACCESS: High-speed internet
EXTERNAL PORTS: 4X USB 2.0 Ports, camera card reader
EXTERNAL DEVICES: Monitor capable of 1280X1024 resolution or equivalent, multimedia keyboard or equivalent, optical mouse or equivalent, stereo speakers/headphones, color printer
POWER: 300-joule capable surge protector, 400Watts power supply

With a computer like this, it is possible to run Windows Vista Basic 32bit without many problems. As these are minimum requirements, a computer built with these standards will not be very performing, but it will run rather efficiently. With a computer not meeting these requirements, it is recommended to install Windows XP Professionnal, or a version of Linux
